Lalibela is the home of eleven churches carved out of volcanic tuff in the 12^thcentury. While rock-churches are common in Ethiopia, the Lalibela ones are unique due to their concentration and refinement. It is only here we get free standing monolithic churches. The Lalibela churches are regarded widely as one of the wonders of the world. The highlight of the visit of Lalibela is the cruciform church, Bete Gyorgis, which is undoubtedly the most photographed church in Ethiopia.

The sites around Lalibela area such as Asheton Maryam and Neakutoleab are also of historical significance in their own right.

The hike to Neakutoleab climbs up a rocky path with very nice viewpoints over the town of Lalibela and its surroundings. Some of the area you pass along is inhabited by the Amhara people who practice family based subsistent agriculture. You will stop in a small village to see the local life. You will also visit the 13th century rock-cut church of Asheton. The hill near the church has almost 360° view.

The excursion to Kechin Mesk Afaf. Upon leaving the village of Lalibela the path follows established trails and offers a nice view of the surrounding mountainous landscape. The path also passes by the village of Neakutoleab where you see the village life. You can also stop to visit the 13th century cave church of Neakutoleab.

Axum is one of the oldest centers of Ethiopian civilization. It is also considered to be the home of the Ark of the Covenant and the cradle of Ethiopian Christianity. The highlight of the visit of Axum is the stelae park which harbors many syenite stelae. Originally measuring 33 meters and weighing 520 tones, the largest one was the largest piece of rock ever carved and transported by human beings. The surrounding of Axum has plenty of sites of historical significance. The way of life of the Tigrian people who live in Axum and its environs is also interesting. The majority of the Trigrian practice traditional agriculture and keep livestock.

Axum 2200m, Adi Tsehafi 2400m.
Camel excursion to Adi Tsehafi passes across a hilly and rocky country. An Ethiopian saint named Yared lived and worked at Adi Tsehafi in the 6th century A.D. Yared was the founder of Ethiopian musical notations. On the way you will see the local villages and stop to experience the village life.

Axum 2200m, Aba Libanos 2000m.
Camel excursion to Aba Libanos in Hawlti Melazo area. The path is mostly flat agricultural land. The Tigryan people here practice rain-fed family based agriculture during the rainy season in July and August. Hawlti Melazo area is the home of important archeological sites dating back to the 5th century B.C.

Axum 2200m, Gobedra 2300m.

Camel excursion to Gobedra which is the area where the famous stelae of Axum were excavated. The first part of the path passes through the old part of the town of Axum. People here build their houses from rocks. The path is relatively flat but the last part of the path is hilly and rocky. You will see granite boulders which indicate that the ancient people of Axum carved rocks from the site for stelae, tombs, palaces and churches.
